It’s Only a Game

It’s hard to believe that it was only two years ago that SITE started the IT Council committee on Games & Simulations. While mainstream acceptance of games as an educational medium is still a ways off; certainly, the role of games as a social phenomenon is now better understood. Just consider the past holiday season that saw an epic struggle among three boxes—PS 2, X-Box and Wii. The loser in that battle sold billions of dollars, while the winner sold billions more. Math Education Technology Initiatives The 11th Annual AMTE Conference was held in Irvine, California this weekend – and the annual award for an exemplary paper on technology and teacher, jointly sponsored with SITE, was presented.

Research threads

There is some interesting discussion about research tucked in under the Digital Storytelling category, with comments from both Bernard Robin and Gerald Knezek, chair of our Research and Evaluation committee.

Gerald’s response to Cynthia Garrety draws together some threads from different places and makes links between his current work in Ecuador and Mike’s project in Costa Rica. You can find it under Research in the Digital Storytelling area.

As the activity in this blog site increases, it will become easy not to spot items of interest if they are tucked under a category you might not normally visit. A good way to keep tabs on what is happening here is to subscribe to the RSS feeds for both Posts and Comments (see the left sidebar). If you are using a modern browser that supports RSS, you can be alerted to new material each time you open the browser and then deal with it as you are able.

iStory Tour: Costa Rica

Perhaps it could only be an organization like SITE that leaves one occasionally perplexed when attempting to post a blog entry.

I have had the good fortune to work with a group of international educators since last summer on a project called iStory Tours. This 21st century learning approach to global awareness allows participants in academic travel to blog, podcast and create digital stories (in our case, we’re also playing around with geocaching).
